Flat Roofing in Sheffield
Flat roofs for extensions, dormers, garages and porches, laid with proper falls and edge detailing.
A flat roof is only as good as its falls, its upstands and its edge trims. Most flat roof failures I see in Sheffield are ponding water caused by inadequate firrings, or a membrane that was never properly dressed up behind the render. Whether it is GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber or torch-on felt, the deck is rebuilt to fall before anything is laid over it.
Choosing the right system
GRP fibreglass gives a seamless, hard-wearing finish and suits extension and dormer roofs that are on view. EPDM rubber is laid as a single sheet with very few joints and copes well with movement. Torch-on felt remains a cost-effective option for garages and outbuildings. I will explain which suits the roof and the budget rather than fitting one system to everything.
Insulation and Building Regulations
A new or replacement flat roof over a heated space normally has to meet current insulation standards as a warm-deck build-up. That affects roof height and door thresholds, so it is designed in from the start rather than discovered part-way through.

FAQ
Flat Roofing — common questions
How long does a flat roof last?+
A properly installed GRP or EPDM flat roof typically lasts 20–30 years. Older felt roofs are usually nearer 10–15.
Why does my flat roof hold water?+
Almost always inadequate fall, a sagging deck or a blocked outlet. Recoating without correcting the fall just repeats the problem, so the deck is rebuilt as part of the work.
Can you fit a flat roof over an existing one?+
Occasionally, but only if the existing deck is sound and dry. Overlaying wet insulation traps moisture and shortens the life of the new roof considerably.
Can a flat roof have a rooflight?+
Yes. Fixed and opening flat rooflights are a common addition on extension roofs and are detailed into the membrane with a proper upstand kerb.
